When using Waitress versions 2.1.0 and prior behind a proxy that does not properly validate the incoming HTTP request matches the RFC7230 standard, Waitress and the frontend proxy may disagree on where one request starts and where it ends. This would allow requests to be smuggled via the front-end proxy to waitress and later behavior. There are two classes of vulnerability that may lead to request smuggling that are addressed by this advisory: The use of Python's `int()` to parse strings into integers, leading to `+10` to be parsed as `10`, or `0x01` to be parsed as `1`, where as the standard specifies that the string should contain only digits or hex digits; and Waitress does not support chunk extensions, however it was discarding them without validating that they did not contain illegal characters. This vulnerability has been patched in Waitress 2.1.1. A workaround is available. When deploying a proxy in front of waitress, turning on any and all functionality to make sure that the request matches the RFC7230 standard. Certain proxy servers may not have this functionality though and users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of waitress instead.","state":"PUBLIC","assigner":"security-advisories@github.com","published_at":"2022-03-17 13:15:00","updated_at":"2022-09-23 18:57:00"},"problem_types":["CWE-444"],"metrics":[],"references":[{"url":"https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2022/05/msg00011.html","name":"[debian-lts-announce] 20220512 [SECURITY] [DLA 3000-1] waitress security update","refsource":"MLIST","tags":[],"title":"[SECURITY] [DLA 3000-1] waitress security update","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/releases/tag/v2.1.1","name":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/releases/tag/v2.1.1","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Release v2.1.1: Merge pull request from GHSA-4f7p-27jc-3c36 · Pylons/waitress · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/commit/9e0b8c801e4d505c2ffc91b891af4ba48af715e0","name":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/commit/9e0b8c801e4d505c2ffc91b891af4ba48af715e0","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Merge pull request from GHSA-4f7p-27jc-3c36 · Pylons/waitress@9e0b8c8 · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://www.debian.org/security/2022/dsa-5138","name":"DSA-5138","refsource":"DEBIAN","tags":[],"title":"Debian -- Security Information -- DSA-5138-1 waitress","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/security/advisories/GHSA-4f7p-27jc-3c36","name":"https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/security/advisories/GHSA-4f7p-27jc-3c36","refsource":"CONFIRM","tags":[],"title":"Inconsistent Interpretation of HTTP Requests ('HTTP Request Smuggling') in waitress · Advisory · Pylons/waitress · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2022-24761","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2022-24761","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[{"cve_year":"2022","cve_id":"24761","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"a","cpe4":"agendaless","cpe5":"waitress","cpe6":"*","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"},{"cve_year":"2022","cve_id":"24761","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"o","cpe4":"debian","cpe5":"debian_linux","cpe6":"9.0","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"}],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"179276","title":"Debian Security Update for waitress (DLA 3000-1)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"179293","title":"Debian Security Update for waitress (DSA 5138-1)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"183960","title":"Debian Security Update for waitress (CVE-2022-24761)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"198729","title":"Ubuntu Security Notification for Waitress Vulnerability (USN-5364-1)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"240202","title":"Red Hat Update for OpenStack Platform 16.2 (RHSA-2022:1253)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"240203","title":"Red Hat Update for OpenStack Platform 16.1 (RHSA-2022:1254)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"240204","title":"Red Hat Update for OpenStack Platform 13.0 (RHSA-2022:1264)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"354473","title":"Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python-waitress : ALAS2022-2022-235"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"354558","title":"Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python-waitress : ALAS-2022-235"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"671899","title":"EulerOS Security Update for python-waitress (EulerOS-SA-2022-1948)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-24761","qid":"752723","title":"SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for python-waitress (SUSE-SU-2022:3731-1)"}]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"CVE_data_meta":{"ASSIGNER":"security-advisories@github.com","ID":"CVE-2022-24761","STATE":"PUBLIC","TITLE":"HTTP Request Smuggling in waitress"},"affects":{"vendor":{"vendor_data":[{"product":{"product_data":[{"product_name":"waitress","version":{"version_data":[{"version_value":"< 2.1.1"}]}}]},"vendor_name":"Pylons"}]}},"data_format":"MITRE","data_type":"CVE","data_version":"4.0","description":{"description_data":[{"lang":"eng","value":"Waitress is a Web Server Gateway Interface server for Python 2 and 3.
