The `parse` method of the JSON5 library before and including versions 1.0.1 and 2.2.1 does not restrict parsing of keys named `__proto__`, allowing specially crafted strings to pollute the prototype of the resulting object. This vulnerability pollutes the prototype of the object returned by `JSON5.parse` and not the global Object prototype, which is the commonly understood definition of Prototype Pollution. However, polluting the prototype of a single object can have significant security impact for an application if the object is later used in trusted operations. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to set arbitrary and unexpected keys on the object returned from `JSON5.parse`. The actual impact will depend on how applications utilize the returned object and how they filter unwanted keys, but could include denial of service, cross-site scripting, elevation of privilege, and in extreme cases, remote code execution. `JSON5.parse` should restrict parsing of `__proto__` keys when parsing JSON strings to objects. As a point of reference, the `JSON.parse` method included in JavaScript ignores `__proto__` keys. Simply changing `JSON5.parse` to `JSON.parse` in the examples above mitigates this vulnerability. This vulnerability is patched in json5 versions 1.0.2, 2.2.2, and later.","state":"PUBLIC","assigner":"security-advisories@github.com","published_at":"2022-12-24 04:15:00","updated_at":"2023-11-26 01:15:00"},"problem_types":["CWE-1321"],"metrics":[],"references":[{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/3S26TLPLVFAJTUN3VIXFDEBEXDYO22CE/","name":"FEDORA-2023-e7297a4aeb","refsource":"FEDORA","tags":[],"title":"[SECURITY] Fedora 37 Update: pgadmin4-6.19-1.fc37 - package-announce - Fedora Mailing-Lists","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/json5/json5/issues/295","name":"https://github.com/json5/json5/issues/295","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Prototype Pollution in JSON5 · Issue #295 · json5/json5 · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/json5/json5/security/advisories/GHSA-9c47-m6qq-7p4h","name":"https://github.com/json5/json5/security/advisories/GHSA-9c47-m6qq-7p4h","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Prototype Pollution in JSON5 via Parse Method · Advisory · json5/json5 · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"404"},{"url":"https://github.com/json5/json5/pull/298","name":"https://github.com/json5/json5/pull/298","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Backport fix for CVE-2022-46175 to v1 by ashkulz · Pull Request #298 · json5/json5 · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/3S26TLPLVFAJTUN3VIXFDEBEXDYO22CE/","name":"FEDORA-2023-e7297a4aeb","refsource":"","tags":[],"title":"[SECURITY] Fedora 37 Update: pgadmin4-6.19-1.fc37 - package-announce - Fedora Mailing-Lists","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://github.com/json5/json5/issues/199","name":"https://github.com/json5/json5/issues/199","refsource":"MISC","tags":[],"title":"Should __proto__ property be treated specially? · Issue #199 · json5/json5 · GitHub","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2023/11/msg00021.html","name":"[debian-lts-announce] 20231125 [SECURITY] [DLA 3665-1] node-json5 security update","refsource":"","tags":[],"title":"[SECURITY] [DLA 3665-1] node-json5 security update","mime":"text/html","httpstatus":"200","archivestatus":"200"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2022-46175","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2022-46175","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[{"cve_year":"2022","cve_id":"46175","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"o","cpe4":"fedoraproject","cpe5":"fedora","cpe6":"37","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"},{"cve_year":"2022","cve_id":"46175","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"a","cpe4":"json5","cpe5":"json5","cpe6":"*","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"node.js","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"}],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[{"cve":"CVE-2022-46175","qid":"183810","title":"Debian Security Update for node-json5 (CVE-2022-46175)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-46175","qid":"283651","title":"Fedora Security Update for pgadmin4 (FEDORA-2023-e7297a4aeb)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-46175","qid":"378599","title":"Splunk Enterprise Third Party Package Updates for June (SVD-2023-0613)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-46175","qid":"378883","title":"Splunk Enterprise August Third Party Package Updates (SVD-2023-0808)"},{"cve":"CVE-2022-46175","qid":"6000346","title":"Debian Security Update for node-json5 (DLA 3665-1)"}]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"data_version":"4.0","data_type":"CVE","data_format":"MITRE","CVE_data_meta":{"ID":"CVE-2022-46175","ASSIGNER":"security-advisories@github.com","STATE":"PUBLIC"},"description":{"description_data":[{"lang":"eng","value":"JSON5 is an extension to the popular JSON file format that aims to be easier to write and maintain by hand (e.g. for config files).
