In versions up to and including 0.9-rc2, the simple protocol server ignores the documented client limit and accepts unlimited connections, allowing for easy local DoS. Although `CLIENTS_MAX` is defined, `server_work()` unconditionally `accept()`s and `client_new()` always appends the new client and increments `n_clients`. There is no check against the limit. When client cannot be accepted as a result of maximal socket number of avahi-daemon, it logs unconditionally error per each connection. Unprivileged local users can exhaust daemon memory and file descriptors, causing a denial of service system-wide for mDNS/DNS-SD. Exhausting local file descriptors causes increased system load caused by logging errors of each of request. Overloading prevents glibc calls using nss-mdns plugins to resolve `*.local.` names and link-local addresses. As of time of publication, no known patched versions are available, but a candidate fix is available in pull request 808, and some workarounds are available. Simple clients are offered for nss-mdns package functionality. It is not possible to disable the unix socket `/run/avahi-daemon/socket`, but resolution requests received via DBus are not affected directly. Tools avahi-resolve, avahi-resolve-address and avahi-resolve-host-name are not affected, they use DBus interface. It is possible to change permissions of unix socket after avahi-daemon is started. But avahi-daemon does not provide any configuration for it. Additional access restrictions like SELinux can also prevent unwanted tools to access the socket and keep resolution working for trusted users.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2025-12-18 21:15:53","updated_at":"2026-10-13 11:10:00"},"problem_types":["CWE-400","CWE-400 CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption"],"metrics":[{"version":"3.1","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"5.5","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","baseScore":5.5,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","attackVector":"LOCAL","attackComplexity":"LOW","privilegesRequired":"LOW","userInteraction":"NONE","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"NONE","integrityImpact":"NONE","availabilityImpact":"HIGH"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"5.5","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","data":{"attackComplexity":"LOW","attackVector":"LOCAL","availabilityImpact":"HIGH","baseScore":5.5,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","confidentialityImpact":"NONE","integrityImpact":"NONE","privilegesRequired":"LOW","scope":"UNCHANGED","userInteraction":"NONE","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://zeropath.com/blog/avahi-simple-protocol-server-dos-cve-2025-59529","name":"https://zeropath.com/blog/avahi-simple-protocol-server-dos-cve-2025-59529","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":["Exploit","Third Party Advisory"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2025/12/19/1","name":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2025/12/19/1","refsource":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","tags":["Exploit","Mailing List"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/avahi/avahi/pull/808","name":"https://github.com/avahi/avahi/pull/808","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":["Issue Tracking","Patch"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/avahi/avahi/security/advisories/GHSA-73wf-3xmj-x82q","name":"https://github.com/avahi/avahi/security/advisories/GHSA-73wf-3xmj-x82q","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":["Exploit","Vendor Advisory"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2025-59529","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-59529","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"avahi","product":"avahi","version":"affected <= 0.9-rc2","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[{"cve_year":"2025","cve_id":"59529","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"a","cpe4":"avahi","cpe5":"avahi","cpe6":"*","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"},{"cve_year":"2025","cve_id":"59529","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"a","cpe4":"avahi","cpe5":"avahi","cpe6":"0.9","cpe7":"rc1","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"}],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"adp":[{"metrics":[{"other":{"content":{"id":"CVE-2025-59529","options":[{"Exploitation":"poc"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"role":"CISA Coordinator","timestamp":"2025-12-18T20:41:46.401974Z","version":"2.0.3"},"type":"ssvc"}}],"providerMetadata":{"dateUpdated":"2025-12-18T20:41:55.199Z","orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP"},"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment"},{"providerMetadata":{"dateUpdated":"2025-12-19T22:04:36.268Z","orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE"},"references":[{"url":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2025/12/19/1"}],"title":"CVE Program Container"}],"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"avahi","vendor":"avahi","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"<= 0.9-rc2"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Avahi is a system which facilitates service discovery on a local network via the mDNS/DNS-SD protocol suite.
