From 2.13.0 until 2.14.0, PyJWT HMACAlgorithm.prepare_key is affected because HMAC key guard only recognizes top-level public JWK forms and misses container representations. This occurs when an application allows HMAC and asymmetric algorithms and passes a public JWK container as the raw key. As a result, public asymmetric key material is accepted as the HMAC secret. Consequently, an attacker who knows the public key can forge a token with arbitrary authenticated claims. This issue is fixed in version 2.14.0.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2026-09-28 21:17:15","updated_at":"2026-09-28 21:17:15"},"problem_types":["CWE-347","CWE-347 CWE-347: Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature"],"metrics":[{"version":"3.1","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"7.4","severity":"HIGH","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","baseScore":7.4,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","attackVector":"NETWORK","attackComplexity":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"NONE","userInteraction":"NONE","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"HIGH","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"NONE"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"7.4","severity":"HIGH","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","data":{"attackComplexity":"HIGH","attackVector":"NETWORK","availabilityImpact":"NONE","baseScore":7.4,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","confidentialityImpact":"HIGH","integrityImpact":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"NONE","scope":"UNCHANGED","userInteraction":"NONE","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","version":"3.1"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/releases/tag/2.14.0","name":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/releases/tag/2.14.0","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/commit/801cd128528c62d9b23fcd161d1a2e1c17982f95","name":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/commit/801cd128528c62d9b23fcd161d1a2e1c17982f95","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/security/advisories/GHSA-w2cx-738m-mc7w","name":"https://github.com/jpadilla/pyjwt/security/advisories/GHSA-w2cx-738m-mc7w","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-102273","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-102273","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"jpadilla","product":"pyjwt","version":"affected >= 2.13.0, < 2.14.0","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"pyjwt","vendor":"jpadilla","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":">= 2.13.0, < 2.14.0"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"PyJWT is a Python implementation of JSON Web Token standards.
