Prior to 1.0.8, Crass incorrectly treats a closing parenthesis after an escaped backslash as escaped while consuming the remnants of a bad URL. Crass therefore keeps declarations, style rules, or at-rules inside a bad URL token even though a browser treats them as live CSS. A sanitizer that parses untrusted CSS with Crass and reserializes it without rejecting the bad URL can allow CSS used for UI redress, external resource loading, or CSS-based data exfiltration, but this issue does not enable script execution in modern browsers. This issue is fixed in version 1.0.8.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2026-10-27 21:18:05","updated_at":"2026-10-27 21:18:05"},"problem_types":["CWE-436","CWE-436 CWE-436: Interpretation Conflict"],"metrics":[{"version":"4.0","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"5.3","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X","data":{"version":"4.0","vectorString":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X","baseScore":5.3,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","attackVector":"NETWORK","attackComplexity":"LOW","attackRequirements":"NONE","privilegesRequired":"NONE","userInteraction":"PASSIVE","vulnConfidentialityImpact":"NONE","vulnIntegrityImpact":"NONE","vulnAvailabilityImpact":"NONE","subConfidentialityImpact":"LOW","subIntegrityImpact":"LOW","subAvailabilityImpact":"NONE","exploitMaturity":"NOT_DEFINED","confidentialityRequirement":"NOT_DEFINED","integrityRequirement":"NOT_DEFINED","availabilityRequirement":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedAttackVector":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedAttackComplexity":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedAttackRequirements":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedPrivilegesRequired":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedUserInteraction":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedVulnConfidentialityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedVulnIntegrityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedVulnAvailabilityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedSubConfidentialityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedSubIntegrityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","modifiedSubAvailabilityImpact":"NOT_DEFINED","Safety":"NOT_DEFINED","Automatable":"NOT_DEFINED","Recovery":"NOT_DEFINED","valueDensity":"NOT_DEFINED","vulnerabilityResponseEffort":"NOT_DEFINED","providerUrgency":"NOT_DEFINED"}},{"version":"4.0","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"5.3","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N","data":{"attackComplexity":"LOW","attackRequirements":"NONE","attackVector":"NETWORK","baseScore":5.3,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","privilegesRequired":"NONE","subAvailabilityImpact":"NONE","subConfidentialityImpact":"LOW","subIntegrityImpact":"LOW","userInteraction":"PASSIVE","vectorString":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N","version":"4.0","vulnAvailabilityImpact":"NONE","vulnConfidentialityImpact":"NONE","vulnIntegrityImpact":"NONE"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/security/advisories/GHSA-pq4g-8rxf-4g29","name":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/security/advisories/GHSA-pq4g-8rxf-4g29","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/releases/tag/v1.0.8","name":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/releases/tag/v1.0.8","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/commit/689fc45c632fdf3803b2f4e844ffc9cca3b08f34","name":"https://github.com/rgrove/crass/commit/689fc45c632fdf3803b2f4e844ffc9cca3b08f34","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-116695","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-116695","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"rgrove","product":"crass","version":"affected < 1.0.8","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"crass","vendor":"rgrove","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"< 1.0.8"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Crass is a Ruby CSS parser that is compliant with the CSS Syntax Level 3 specification.
