Prior to version 0.4.2, a command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in the Zen C compiler allows local attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands by providing a specially crafted output filename via the `-o` command-line argument. The vulnerability existed in the `main` application logic (specifically in `src/main.c`), where the compiler constructed a shell command string to invoke the backend C compiler. This command string was built by concatenating various arguments, including the user-controlled output filename, and was subsequently executed using the `system()` function. Because `system()` invokes a shell to parse and execute the command, shell metacharacters within the output filename were interpreted by the shell, leading to arbitrary command execution. An attacker who can influence the command-line arguments passed to the `zc` compiler (like through a build script or a CI/CD pipeline configuration) can execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the user running the compiler. The vulnerability has been fixed in version 0.4.2 by removing `system()` calls, implementing `ArgList`, and internal argument handling. Users are advised to update to Zen C version v0.4.2 or later.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2026-02-26 23:16:35","updated_at":"2026-05-01 14:38:16"},"problem_types":["CWE-78","CWE-78 CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection')"],"metrics":[{"version":"3.1","source":"nvd@nist.gov","type":"Primary","score":"7.3","severity":"HIGH","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","baseScore":7.3,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","attackVector":"LOCAL","attackComplexity":"LOW","privilegesRequired":"LOW","userInteraction":"REQUIRED","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"HIGH","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"HIGH"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"6.6","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L","baseScore":6.6,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","attackVector":"LOCAL","attackComplexity":"LOW","privilegesRequired":"NONE","userInteraction":"REQUIRED","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"LOW","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"LOW"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"6.6","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L","data":{"attackComplexity":"LOW","attackVector":"LOCAL","availabilityImpact":"LOW","baseScore":6.6,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","confidentialityImpact":"LOW","integrityImpact":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"NONE","scope":"UNCHANGED","userInteraction":"REQUIRED","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L","version":"3.1"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://f0nduesav0yarde.github.io/blog/vulnerabilities/cve-2026-28207/","name":"https://f0nduesav0yarde.github.io/blog/vulnerabilities/cve-2026-28207/","refsource":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","tags":["Exploit","Third Party Advisory"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/z-libs/Zen-C/security/advisories/GHSA-9rff-x96h-76h2","name":"https://github.com/z-libs/Zen-C/security/advisories/GHSA-9rff-x96h-76h2","refsource":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","tags":["Exploit","Mitigation","Vendor Advisory"],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-28207","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-28207","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"z-libs","product":"Zen-C","version":"affected < 0.4.2","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[{"cve_year":"2026","cve_id":"28207","vulnerable":"1","versionEndIncluding":"","cpe1":"cpe","cpe2":"2.3","cpe3":"a","cpe4":"zenc-lang","cpe5":"zen_c","cpe6":"*","cpe7":"*","cpe8":"*","cpe9":"*","cpe10":"*","cpe11":"*","cpe12":"*","cpe13":"*"}],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":{"cve_year":"2026","cve_id":"28207","cve":"CVE-2026-28207","epss":"0.000150000","percentile":"0.032510000","score_date":"2026-05-05","updated_at":"2026-05-06 00:08:10"},"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"adp":[{"providerMetadata":{"dateUpdated":"2026-02-27T16:57:44.054Z","orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE"},"references":[{"url":"https://f0nduesav0yarde.github.io/blog/vulnerabilities/cve-2026-28207/"}],"title":"CVE Program Container","x_generator":{"engine":"ADPogram 0.0.1"}},{"metrics":[{"other":{"content":{"id":"CVE-2026-28207","options":[{"Exploitation":"poc"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"role":"CISA Coordinator","timestamp":"2026-03-02T20:48:05.636087Z","version":"2.0.3"},"type":"ssvc"}}],"providerMetadata":{"dateUpdated":"2026-03-02T20:48:09.055Z","orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP"},"references":[{"tags":["exploit"],"url":"https://github.com/z-libs/Zen-C/security/advisories/GHSA-9rff-x96h-76h2"}],"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment"}],"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"Zen-C","vendor":"z-libs","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"< 0.4.2"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Zen C is a systems programming language that compiles to human-readable GNU C/C11.
