Prior to 1.8.220, the email processing pipeline in FreeScout's FetchEmails command has two code paths for identifying agent (user) replies based on In-Reply-To / References headers. The notification reply path (notify-{thread_id}-{user_id}-...) extracts thread_id and user_id directly from the Message-ID without HMAC verification. An external attacker who can spoof the From address of a helpdesk agent can inject messages that FreeScout processes as legitimate agent replies — which are then automatically forwarded to customers via the legitimate SMTP server. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.8.220.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2026-05-29 20:16:28","updated_at":"2026-05-29 20:21:38"},"problem_types":["CWE-290","CWE-345","CWE-290 CWE-290: Authentication Bypass by Spoofing","CWE-345 CWE-345: Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity"],"metrics":[{"version":"3.1","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"7.5","severity":"HIGH","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N","baseScore":7.5,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","attackVector":"NETWORK","attackComplexity":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"NONE","userInteraction":"NONE","scope":"CHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"LOW","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"NONE"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"7.5","severity":"HIGH","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N","data":{"attackComplexity":"HIGH","attackVector":"NETWORK","availabilityImpact":"NONE","baseScore":7.5,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","confidentialityImpact":"LOW","integrityImpact":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"NONE","scope":"CHANGED","userInteraction":"NONE","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N","version":"3.1"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/freescout-help-desk/freescout/commit/d902f19038213c6a376947d269b00440908e88a0","name":"https://github.com/freescout-help-desk/freescout/commit/d902f19038213c6a376947d269b00440908e88a0","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://github.com/freescout-help-desk/freescout/security/advisories/GHSA-6r38-6mcf-2ww3","name":"https://github.com/freescout-help-desk/freescout/security/advisories/GHSA-6r38-6mcf-2ww3","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-47123","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-47123","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"freescout-help-desk","product":"freescout","version":"affected < 1.8.220","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":null,"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"freescout","vendor":"freescout-help-desk","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"< 1.8.220"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"FreeScout is a free help desk and shared inbox built with PHP's Laravel framework.
