In versions prior to 0.47.2, a local privilege escalation vulnerability exists in kitty's file transmission protocol where a child process running in the terminal can write to arbitrary files on the filesystem by exploiting a TOCTOU (Time-of-Check-Time-of-Use) race condition between symlink validation and file creation. The `os.open()` call used to create files does not use `O_NOFOLLOW`, allowing an attacker to create a symlink between the initial stat check and the actual file open, causing the write to follow the symlink to an arbitrary destination. Version 0.47.2 fixes the issue.","state":"PUBLISHED","assigner":"GitHub_M","published_at":"2026-06-12 20:16:47","updated_at":"2026-06-12 20:16:47"},"problem_types":["CWE-59","CWE-367","CWE-426","CWE-59 CWE-59: Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following')","CWE-367 CWE-367: Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition","CWE-426 CWE-426: Untrusted Search Path"],"metrics":[{"version":"3.1","source":"security-advisories@github.com","type":"Secondary","score":"5","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L","data":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L","baseScore":5,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","attackVector":"LOCAL","attackComplexity":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"LOW","userInteraction":"REQUIRED","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"NONE","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"LOW"}},{"version":"3.1","source":"CNA","type":"DECLARED","score":"5","severity":"MEDIUM","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L","data":{"attackComplexity":"HIGH","attackVector":"LOCAL","availabilityImpact":"LOW","baseScore":5,"baseSeverity":"MEDIUM","confidentialityImpact":"NONE","integrityImpact":"HIGH","privilegesRequired":"LOW","scope":"UNCHANGED","userInteraction":"REQUIRED","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L","version":"3.1"}}],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/security/advisories/GHSA-q446-x7q6-vcxh","name":"https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/security/advisories/GHSA-q446-x7q6-vcxh","refsource":"security-advisories@github.com","tags":[],"title":"","mime":"","httpstatus":"","archivestatus":"0"},{"url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-54055","name":"CVE Program record","refsource":"CVE.ORG","tags":["canonical"]},{"url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-54055","name":"NVD vulnerability detail","refsource":"NVD","tags":["canonical","analysis"]}],"affected":[{"source":"CNA","vendor":"kovidgoyal","product":"kitty","version":"affected < 0.47.2","platforms":[]}],"timeline":[],"solutions":[],"workarounds":[],"exploits":[],"credits":[],"nvd_cpes":[],"vendor_comments":[],"enrichments":{"kev":null,"epss":{"cve_year":"2026","cve_id":"54055","cve":"CVE-2026-54055","epss":"0.000120000","percentile":"0.017910000","score_date":"2026-06-13","updated_at":"2026-06-14 00:08:31"},"legacy_qids":[]},"source_records":{"cve_program":{"containers":{"cna":{"affected":[{"product":"kitty","vendor":"kovidgoyal","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"< 0.47.2"}]}],"descriptions":[{"lang":"en","value":"Kitty is a cross-platform GPU based terminal.
