`uhid_char_write()` accepts `UHID_CREATE2` with `BUS_USB` and Valve 0x28de:0x1205, causing `hid_add_device()` to bind `steam_probe()` and create the FF input device. The local actor races `evdev_write(EV_FF)` with `UHID_DESTROY`, whose `uhid_dev_destroy()` path reaches the patched `steam_remove()`.\nAC:L - `steam_play_effect()` queues `coalesce_rumble_work` for HZ/20; repeated EV_FF writes can queue it after old `steam_remove()` cancels work but before `steam_input_unregister()` removes evdev. The attacker controls both EV_FF submission and UHID teardown, making the race repeatable.\nPR:L - `uhid_char_write()`, `uhid_dev_create2()`, and `evdev_write()` contain no capability or namespace-admin check; access is governed by device-node DAC. An ordinary logged-in user granted `/dev/uhid` and the created `/dev/input/event*` therefore needs only low privileges.\nUI:N - The attacking process creates the forged Steam Deck, uploads and plays rumble, and destroys its own UHID device; the delayed work then runs automatically. No victim must plug in hardware, open a file, or approve an action.\nS:U - `steam_remove()` releases the devm-allocated `struct steam_device`, and the stale work item subsequently accesses memory within the same host kernel. No VM, IOMMU, or other security-authority boundary is crossed.\nC:H - `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` reads freed `rumble_left/right`, then `steam_haptic_rumble()` follows the freed `steam->hdev` into HID report metadata. Reclaiming these slabs makes the UAF reads attacker-directed, supporting high confidentiality impact.\nI:H - `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` locks the freed `report_mutex`, can requeue the embedded freed work item, and `steam_send_report()` dispatches through `steam->hdev->ll_driver->raw_request`. Controlled slab reuse therefore permits write and control-flow corruption.\nA:H - The delayed `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` or `steam_haptic_rumble_cb()` can run after devres frees `steam`, so its mutex, workqueue, and HID dereferences can oops or panic the kernel. The actor can recreate the UHID device and repeat the teardown."}]}],"providerMetadata":{"dateUpdated":"2026-10-26T06:56:55.094Z","orgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","shortName":"Linux"},"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d2587923d50c8b141ce0ccb284c714cf6054d6a7"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/81a8209c09f9be7eef860ca6cc154749a6b4d243"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/86724f4bcf6049c3a322f7a7b1f968210059c46a"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b5ea938ff776306798d3a11485c2475034f92131"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ddce9641ce924ed91ec8304577e463823a29ffaf"}],"title":"HID: steam: Rearrange teardown sequence","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}}},"cveMetadata":{"assignerOrgId":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","assignerShortName":"Linux","cveId":"CVE-2026-98945","datePublished":"2026-10-23T12:19:04.191Z","dateReserved":"2026-09-25T10:25:14.381Z","dateUpdated":"2026-10-26T06:56:55.094Z","state":"PUBLISHED"},"dataType":"CVE_RECORD","dataVersion":"5.2"},"nvd":{"publishedDate":"2026-10-23 13:17:15","lastModifiedDate":"2026-10-26 07:17:18","problem_types":[],"metrics":{"cvssMetricV31":[{"source":"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67","type":"Secondary","cvssData":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","baseScore":7.8,"baseSeverity":"HIGH","attackVector":"LOCAL","attackComplexity":"LOW","privilegesRequired":"LOW","userInteraction":"NONE","scope":"UNCHANGED","confidentialityImpact":"HIGH","integrityImpact":"HIGH","availabilityImpact":"HIGH"},"exploitabilityScore":1.8,"impactScore":5.9}]},"configurations":[]},"legacy_mitre":{"record":{"CveYear":"2026","CveId":"98945","Ordinal":"1","Title":"HID: steam: Rearrange teardown sequence","CVE":"CVE-2026-98945","Year":"2026"},"notes":[{"CveYear":"2026","CveId":"98945","Ordinal":"1","NoteData":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nHID: steam: Rearrange teardown sequence\n\nThis fixes a narrow window during the teardown sequence where callbacks\ncould still be scheduled during cleanup that would then have a dangling\npointer to the now-freed steam struct.\n\nThis also puts work canceling for rumble and mode switch in\nsteam_unregister, as that shouldn't persist while the client hdev is open.","Type":"Description","Title":"HID: steam: Rearrange teardown sequence"}]}}}
