PuTTY Remote SSH2_MSG_DEBUG Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

A remote SSH2_MSG_DEBUG buffer overflow vulnerability affects PuTTY. This issue is due to insufficient bounds checking on network data prior to copying the data into process buffers.

An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code on a computer running the affected software with the privileges of the user that activated it, facilitating unauthorized access.

PuTTY Remote SSH2_MSG_DEBUG Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Solution:
The vendor has released an upgrade dealing with this issue.

Gentoo has issued an update for the PuTTY package included with Gentoo Linux. Users are advised to upgrade:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-misc/putty-0.56"

TortoiseCVS 1.8.3 is available to address this issue.

PuTTY for Symbian OS 1.3.2 RC1 is available to address this issue.

IBM has released a flash alert with instructions to upgrade to PuTTY version 0.58 in SAN Volume Controller Master Console. Please see the referenced Web flash alert for further information.
