Discussion

Microsoft IE Scriptlet Component Vulnerability

A security vulnerability in the Microsoft Scriptlet Component ActiveX control shipped with Internet Explorer 5 and available for Internet Explorer 4 allows malicious web sites to steal local files and bypass cross-frame security checks.

The Scriptlet Component ActiveX control allows "scriplet" components to be added to web pages. Scriptlets are simply web pages in which the script has been written according to certain conventions, and which can be embedded into other pages via an OBJECT tag.

If a string of the form '%01someURL' is appended to the URL passed to the Scriptlet Component IE will think that the document has been loaded from 'someURL' instead of its true source.

This vulnerability allows a hostile web page to steal local files as long as the pathname is known, as well as permitting "windows spoofing" by allowing the hostile site to impersonate a trusted site.

Microsoft IE Scriptlet Component Vulnerability

Solution:
Microsoft has made a patch available to fix this vulnerability at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/security/mshtml.asp

However, a more recent patch has been released for another vulnerability, the IFRAME ExecCommand vulnerabilty, (http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/696), which has been determined by user testing to undo the fix in the patch released for this vulnerability. Machines that have had that patch applied are once again vulnerable to the attacks described in this listing.
