Discussion

NetBSD Static ARP Vulnerability

ARP is a protocol used to dynamically obtain Network Layer to Link Layer translation services. Static ARP table entries can be created which map Network Layer to Link Layer address without requiring to dynamicly query the network. These can be used as a security measure, to disallow rogue host on the network segment from responding to ARP queries with fake ARP replies that redirect the traffic away from its legitimate host. NetBSD's implementation of ARP allows ARP replies to overwrite ARP entries marked as static thus voiding their security.
