FreeType Compact Font Format (CFF) Multiple Stack Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

FreeType is prone to multiple stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerabilities because it fails to perform adequate boundary-checks on user-supplied data.

Successful exploits may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of an application using the affected library. Failed exploit attempts will likely result in denial-of-service conditions.

NOTE (August 12, 2010): The Type2 'CharStrings' buffer-overflow issue was duplicated in BID 42151 (Apple iOS Multiple Vulnerabilities). This BID has been updated to reflect details that may have been included in BID 42151.

FreeType Compact Font Format (CFF) Multiple Stack Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Core Security Technologies has developed a working commercial exploit for its CORE IMPACT product. This exploit is not otherwise publicly available or known to be circulating in the wild.

The Type2 'CharStrings' buffer-overflow vulnerability is being exploited to jailbreak vulnerable Apple devices.
