Microsoft Windows is prone to multiple buffer-overflow vulnerabilities. These issues affect the Windows Shell Graphics processor.

An attacker can exploit these issues by enticing an unsuspecting user to open or preview a specially crafted BMP image.

Successfully exploiting these issues would allow the attacker to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code in the context of the currently logged-in user. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition.

Reportedly, the vendor silently fixed these issues in Security Advisory MS11-006. Symantec has not verified these fixes. Please see the references for details.
