Microsoft Windows 2000 / NT Path Precedence Vulnerability
Microsoft Windows uses a system variable called the Path in order to search for an application when an absolute path to the application is not specified. A flaw exists in the way that Windows NT and 2000 searches for an application when the path is not specified.
By default, the root of the system drive is not specified in the Path variable. If an operating system file is called, either by the user or the system, without specifying the absolute path, Windows will search the root before searching directories listed in the Path variable.
