Discussion

Microsoft Media Player 9 Unauthorized Media Library Access Vulnerability

Windows Media Player 9 Series is prone to an issue that may result in an attacker obtaining unauthorized access to a compromised user's media library.

The vulnerability exists due to insufficent validation of requests made to the ActiveX control to access the Media Library.

Successful exploitation will result in the attacker obtaining access to a user's Media Library. Information obtained in this manner may be used by an attacker to launch other attacks against a vulnerable system, such as modifying contents of Media Library entries.

Microsoft Media Player 9 Unauthorized Media Library Access Vulnerability

Solution:
Though unconfirmed, it has been reported that the vulnerable control is implemented via wmp.dll but that the kill bit is not set for the vulnerable version. This could make it possible to reintroduce a vulnerable version of the control to a patched system.
