QID 150682: GeoWebCache Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2022-24846)

GeoWebCache is a tile caching server implemented in Java used to cache map tiles coming from a variety of sources such as OGC Web Map Service (WMS).

In affected versions of GeoWebCache, disk quota mechanism can perform an unchecked JNDI lookup, which in turn can be used to perform class deserialization and result in Arbitrary Code Execution. While in GeoWebCache the JNDI strings are provided via local configuration file, in GeoServer a user interface is provided to perform the same, that can be accessed remotely, and requires admin-level login to be used. These lookup are unrestricted in scope and can lead to Code Execution.

Affected Versions:
GeoWebCache versions prior to 1.19.3
GeoWebCache versions 1.20.0 prior to 1.20.2

QID Detection Logic (Unauthenticated):
This QID sends a HTTP GET request to "/geoserver/web/wicket/bookmarkable/org.geoserver.web.AboutGeoServerPage" endpoint on GeoServer and checks for vulnerable version of GeoWebCache running on the application.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to perform Deserialization attack resulting in executing arbitrary commands on the target system.

  • CVSS V3 rated as High - 7.2 severity.
  • CVSS V2 rated as High - 6.5 severity.
