QID 379361: Elasticsearch Kibana Broken Access Control Vulnerability (ESA-2024-01)

Kibana is a source-available data visualization dashboard software for Elasticsearch.

CVE-2024-23446: The Detection Engine Search API does not respect Document-level security (DLS) or Field-level security (FLS) when querying the .alerts-security.alerts-{space_id} indices.

Affected Version:
Kibana versions from 8.0.0 to 8.12.0.

QID Detection Logic (Authenticated):
This authenticated QID checks for Kibana version by running version check command.

QID Detection Logic (Unauthenticated):
This QID sends a GET request to find if the target is running a vulnerable version of kibana.

Note: This issue only affects users that have assigned a role with DLS or FLS configured, users using KPI or group by feature on the alerts page or API users accessing the route directly.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow unauthorized access to documents if their roles are configured with Document-level security (DLS) or Field-level security (FLS) against the aforementioned index.
