QID 730655: Apache Tomcat Denial of Service (DoS) Vulnerability (CVE-2021-42340)
Apache Tomcat is an open source web server and servlet container developed by the Apache Software Foundation.
The object introduced to collect metrics for HTTP upgrade connections was not released for WebSocket connections once the WebSocket connection was closed. This created a memory leak that, over time, could lead to a denial of service via an OutOfMemoryError.
Affected versions:
Apache Tomcat 10.1.0-M1 to 10.1.0-M5
QID Detection Logic (Unauthenticated):
This QID sends a HTTP GET request to an invalid URL and based on the response confirms the vulnerable instance of Apache Tomcat running on the host.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could reveal sensitive information to an unauthorized attacker.
Solution
Customers are advised to upgrade Apache Tomcat to the new version to remediate this vulnerability. For more information please refer to Apache Tomcat Security Advisory.
